An early 20th century 9ct gold “front and back” locket.
The locket is decorated on both sides making it double sided and has a hinged opening. Both sides have an ornate engraved surface. It is stamped as 9ct gold and carries a makers mark for Birmingham jewellery makers Able & Charnell - typically seen on pieces dated up to around 1910ish.

There is a crack on one side which goes all the way through and across the length of the locket. The other side has damage and appears to have been squashed at some point. This side is not cracked but is dented.
Based on the hallmark location the more significant damage is technically on the front but the hallmark is subtle and this could easily be worn back to front which disguises the worst of the damage.
The hinge is in good condition and it opens and closes securely with a satisfying ‘snap’!
This piece needs a special home with someone who can look after it for many more years. It may be possible for the locket to be strengthened from the inside but full repair of the crack is likely not possible because of the delicate design.
